Proactive Fire Prevention
In response to the devastating fires that threatened many areas of Northern California this summer, California Resource Code 4291 was enacted to increase (from 30 feet to 100 feet) defensible areas around housing and other structures. For Harbin, this means that we will be actively clearing dead or sick trees, low branches, and all flammable vegetation around our retreat and residential buildings. The process will involve some equipment noise, and may produce a few new outlooks on the nature around us as we thin out the growth. Thank you in advance for your patience. And rest assured that we are being conscious of our work as we help ensure a safe future for our center and its guests.
We'll miss you Eric!
Well loved, longtime Harbin resident Eric is leaving for the big city. For years he warmly welcomed guests at the Gatehouse, and more recently apprenticed as a staff electrician. But, and perhaps most importantly, he inspired residents to act and improvise. He wrote and directed our monthly Resident Shows and the Christmas Show, each a huge success. Eric himself is an outstanding actor who started out at our monthly Open Mic's, and over time became a full-fledged comedian. Eric's going-away party was an evening of love, tears and entertainment. His warm heart, smiles and fun drama productions will be greatly missed. We wish him the best!
Hidden Cold Plunge now reopened
Guests from the 80's or earlier may have remembered our little spring-fed cold plunge that was located near the heart-shaped pool, but had been covered over with decking platforms. Well, we've recovered and revitalized the pool, which offers a bracing 56 degree plunge just steps from the sauna/steam complex. You'll love it!
