residency

For centuries, the land and hot springs here have been regarded by Native Americans as sacred and healing. Harbin is a magical place – 1700 acres of woodlands nestled on the mountainside, where you breathe the freshest air, surrounded by natural beauty. Harbin is an oasis that offers an alternative lifestyle, away from the anxiety and stress of today’s fast-paced, high-tech world.

We – the approximately 150 Harbin residents – come from varied walks of life, and join as a team to run all aspects of Harbin and live together in community. We gladly accept the responsibility of providing service to our guests who come for rest, reflection and renewal. We create community in our lives by living, working and growing together. Harbin is a place that encourages personal development through service.

We invite applicants for residency of any age, gender, national origin, race, sexual orientation and spiritual belief. Diversity enriches the aliveness of our community. Before you consider applying for residency, it is essential that you have already visited Harbin to have a taste of the life here.

Applicants who are accepted join the candidate program – a time of orientation to the lifestyle and work environment during which both the individual and the candidate council can choose whether to proceed with residency.

Candidacy: The first three months

- Work requirement: 30 hours/wk
- Compensation: begins at minimum wage (CA - $8.00/hr) or more
- Housing: dormitory, camping or shared community house
($65.00/wk)
- Security deposit: $350
- Weekly dues: $42/wk - allows candidates and residents unlimited access to the pools, Harbin events, classes, dances and community gatherings as well as discounts in the Harbin Restaurant and Market
- Optional: Harbin’s Delta Dental Group Plan

Residency

After 3 months of candidacy you become a first year resident with the additional benefits of 1 guest pass per month, the possibility of a reduction in dues based on work performance and discounts on many workshops.

During your first 6 months at Harbin, jobs are assigned through the Human Resources Department. Every job is important to the smooth functioning of our retreat center. Regardless of whether we welcome guests at reception, clean up after them, serve them in the restaurant or repair the plumbing, we are all part of a team living the meaning of service.

After 6 months there is the option to join the Harbin-subsidized health insurance plan.

After 1 year you receive full resident membership in the Harbin community.

It is a simple life at Harbin; abundance lies in the natural beauty of the land and waters. It lies in the richness of the people and the opportunity for conscious growth and celebration.

Come with a positive attitude, ready to contribute your gifts and skills to the growth of Harbin. Come with a committed work ethic because service to our guests and fellow residents creates the foundation on which we build our individual and collective experience of community. Come with an open heart to participate in our sweet and supportive community.

Our Statement of Consciousness

Our resident members operate this retreat and workshop center as a service to others, with common values guiding our actions. Together we choose...

• To recognize our reliance on this land, water and air, and be responsible in our stewardship of it;
• To provide an atmosphere of safety, comfort and quiet, encouraging all to awareness of their own being;
• To welcome people of diverse cultural, economic and social backgrounds;
• To create a place where the human body is nurtured, respected and celebrated;
• To behave harmoniously, bringing communication, respect, integrity and love to our daily interactions;
• To explore and present alternatives in the areas of human potential, bodywork, relationships and holistic thinking;
• To cultivate lives of spiritual awareness and presence, while encouraging others to do the same;
• To manage our human and financial resources in a way that will permit the improvement of Harbin and the support of related projects;

In all of our work, decisions and interactions, we choose to use heart consciousness as our guiding principle.
